Burt Rutan and his privately-funded Scaled Composite team have done something most countries haven't even tried.

They put a man in space this morning. Mike Melville, a close friend of Rutan's and probably one of the best test pilots on the face of the earth, had the honor of piloting SpaceShipOne. Lucky guy!

Where can I sign up?

PS, for those who wonder just how high Melville went, the typical commercial airline flight cruises at 32-33,000 feet. Melville cruised up to 330,000 feet, just a tad higher.

PPS, Rutan and company have probably spent about the same amount to put a man in space as NASA did to design the toilet on the Space Shuttle. OK, I lied. NASA spent way more.
