THE ONLY THING THAT IS CERTAIN IS DEATH AND TAXES

So said Benjamin Franklin*. For years, the US government has been exacting huge taxes on the estates of those folks who busted their ass. Family businesses, family farms and families themselves have been broken apart by the tax. To avoid it, billions have been spent on attorneys, accountants, financial advisers, and ill-conceived investments to avoid the "death tax".

But the game may be over if the Senate approves the bill just passed by the House, which would abolish the tax.

* Actually, he said: " Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."
